The Old Fort at Hesperus' team sees farming education as a continuum where different people are best served by discreet programs, depending on their interests and stage of development. Their sustainable agriculture program includes an educational garden internship, a farmer-in-training program, and market garden incubator.

The USDA Rural Development office announced Notice of Funding Availability (NOSA) last week.  This annual grant program has been used by thousands of rural entrepreneurs over its 15+ year history, and I have had the pleasure (and challenge) of being involved in the application process with many clients. 

The heart of Kitchen Table Consultants' work is one-on-one coaching with food and farm clients, but as their work has grown they have started helping other organizations provide better technical assistance. When soil scientists Wes Jarrell and Leslie Cooperband left Wisconsin to create a sustainable goat dairy farm and organic fruit orchard in central Illinois, they had their work cut out for them. But since becoming the state’s first licensed farmstead dairy in 2005, Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery has expanded acreage, amassed a loyal following for its goat cheeses and gelato, and established a healthy agritourism business. Now, Wes and Leslie are further transforming their land to silvopasture, a regenerative agriculture practice that incorporates trees, prairie and grazing animals.
